EVN is officially the owner and operator of the largest licensed battery storage system in the country.
EVN Macedonia has officially put into operation its first Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), installed within the “Probishtip” photovoltaic power plant. With an installed capacity of 10 MW and storage capacity of 20 MWh, the system represents the largest battery capacity within the entire EVN Group, while also making the company the owner and operator of the largest licensed battery storage system in the country.
By integrating this technology, solar energy produced during the day can now be stored and used during the most optimal periods, enabling greater stability, flexibility, and efficiency of the energy system.
On the occasion of the commissioning of the battery system, the site was visited by the members of the Management Board of EVN Macedonia, managers of the subsidiary companies, representatives of the Municipality of Probishtip, distinguished professors from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technologies, as well as representatives of the contractor company Intebako.
During the visit, the CEOEVN Macedonia commissions its first Battery Energy Storage System of EVN Macedonia, Wolfgang Maier, addressed the attendees.
“Today we stand before our latest achievement – a battery energy storage system installed at the ‘Probishtip’ photovoltaic power plant. This is one of the leading renewable energy projects and the largest battery system within the entire EVN Group and the country. Soon, the system’s capacity will be doubled to 40 MWh. The equipment has already been delivered and is currently in the installation phase,” emphasized Mr. Maier.
The battery system is implemented using modern LiFePO4 (LFP) technology, providing a stable and long operational lifespan of approximately 10 years, or 10,000 operating cycles. The system consists of multiple battery and PCS containers spread across an area of around 580 square meters. The batteries are produced by CATL, one of the global leaders in the battery industry, while the energy conversion system is supplied by K Star.
Following an intensive preparation and implementation process, the project was officially licensed on April 9, 2026.
